Phone Troubleshooting

Before you call us…Try these simple tests may help you determine the source of the problem and save you time and money.

If you’re experiencing static, a clicking sound, no dial tone or can’t call out:

  • Look for symptoms such as cracks in the telephone set or a broken or frayed cord. If you find one or more of these symptoms, unplug or replace that equipment to see if the trouble clears. If you do not find any of these problems, call our repair service.
  • Do you have a cordless phone? If so, unplug it and try a wire-line phone. It could be your equipment.

If you are experiencing problems with your caller ID system, check the batteries first.

INSIDE TESTING:

  • Unplug all telephone sets, answering or Fax machines, caller ID units and computers from the wall jacks in your house.
  • After a few minutes, try a traditional wire-line telephone set on several of your telephone jacks.
  • If the telephone set does not work in any of the jacks, try a different standard, non-cordless telephone set.
  • If the second set does not work, proceed to Outside Testing.

OUTSIDE TESTING:

  • Take one of your traditional wire-line telephone sets outside to the network interface device (NID). This is usually a gray box located on the outside wall of your home near the electric meter.
  • Use a screwdriver to open the cover of the NID device. Plug your telephone into the NID test jack. Make a test call and listen for the problem.
  • If the trouble is no longer present at the NID, the problem could be your inside wiring or equipment. A service charge will apply if the telephone company makes a service call and the problem is a result of customer provided wiring equipment.

Customer Safety

Here are some basic tips and tricks when working on your landline phone.

Do not work on your phone if you wear a pacemaker. All phone lines (and wires within) carry electrical currents. Therefore, it is best to have repairs made by a professional.

When working on your phone,

  • Use tools that have insulated handles to prevent electric shock.
  • Do not touch screw terminals or conductors- they conduct electricity from one place to another.
  • Pay attention to the weather! Thunderstorms in the area increase the chances of shock.
  • Make sure your phone is not connected to the wall jack.
  • Don’t put wiring or connections for your telephone into any outlets, conduits or other boxes that contain electrical wiring.
